UP YOUR DOG SHOW GAME

PRESENTATION

Let Your Dog Shine in the Show Ring

 by Richard Beauchamp

“All dogs have faults. The great ones just carry them well.”  My mentor gave me this piece of advice early on… I have never forgotten it, and time and experience themselves have proven that truer words have probably never been spoken.  Something else I’ve learned over the years that I would add is that the talented exhibitor becomes expert by never allowing those faults or failings to be seen or, if seen at all, obscured by the dog’s quality… I am talking about presenting a dog so well that the dog’s qualities stand out…

Joseph Gregory comments on showing his top winning

Best in Show (45 Bests!) Boxer bitch, “Painted Lady.”

“She had one bad feature: she had a low tail set, but she was animated to the point that you couldn’t tell.   When I took her in the Group, I'd never let her stand idle. Like when you just stand there and talking to somebody. If I had done that, she would look bad. I'd always keep her looking for that goodie where you wouldn’t see her low tail set. I would always have liver in my pocket for her. She would stand there with her neck arched and look pretty. She’d be looking at me all the time that great expression. There were judges outside the ring that would also be judging that dog, so you don't let them see her faults either.  That bitch would always put out and show for me, but I had to always treat her nice. If I didn’t, she’d quit and make herself look horrible.”

Leaving this wonderful advice for future generations.

QUOTES

“When a dog is strung up on a lead so tightly that its feet barely touch the ground, or when it is pulling and straining on the lead, movement can not be evaluated. Handlers sometimes think that faster is better, but speed rarely improves movement, and often it only accentuates a fault.”
