BREEDING BETTER DOGS

UNDERSTANDING STRUCTURE & MOVEMENT

Do you feel like you’re not progressing in your breeding program? Are you having a hard time consistently putting wins on your dogs?  Are you having trouble understanding structure and movement?  Although there is no such thing as an “over-night success,” we have collected a series of articles written by successful breeders and judges to help you begin to improve the quality of your breeding program by giving you time honored advice that works!

PRESENTATION

It is never acceptable to allow one’s dog to look like anything less than a winner when it is in the show ring. Present your dog so well that the dog’s qualities stand out. A good dog can be made to look bad, and although a bad dog can never really be made to look good, a lesser-quality dog can be made to overshadow all of its flaws.  Faults can be made to all but disappear or blend into the overall picture of quality so well that they become inconsequential. It is up to the exhibitor to make that happen!

How can I motivate members?  How can I make my club thrive and attract new members?

or what the dog press tells them will make them part of the ’in-crowd’.

Instead of  becoming outstanding, they wind up as one of the herd.”

-AKC Judge and author Richard Beauchamp

From his book - Solve the Mysteries of Breed Type

DEVELOPING AN EYE FOR A DOG

This concept is the single most important to the success of a dog breeder. Is is the ability to recognize specimens that epitomize the best of a particular breed, including breed type, structure, movement, and soundness.  Individuals in various breeds who have not achieved a great measure of success, this is the one most easily identifiable factor.
